This is a 3D image of the cancer center that is going to be built in Jinja, Uganda in the next following years. Cancer is one of the major cause of mortality in Uganda. Twegaite Microfinance

Organisations like Kiva (http://www.kiva.org/lend) and Microplace (https://www.microplace.com) have changed the lives of millions of people throughout the world. Twegaite started a similar Micro Finance Project in Busoga in 2008. The project was very successful as the report shows. Individuals have adopted smarter farming methods that utilize land and other resources better. They have also formed groups in which they invest together. Small micro finance loans guaranteed by members of these groups mitigate the risk involved in lending. These loans once used well improve the livelihoods of the recipients. They can educate their children better, access better medication, and improve their nutrition. These loans have the capacity to transform Villages.

After the success of this project, Twegaite has decided to expand the program to help more groups.

Things to consider:

• We request that you join efforts in helping the poor and impoverished in Busoga
• You can decide if you want to invest or donate
• If you donate, your money will cyclically improve the lives of many poor people
• If you invest, you are guaranteed a return on your investment
• You can decide to re-invest or get you money back after one season

Mayuge Health Centers

Mayuge District is 10 years old one of the Newest districts in Uganda, created in 2000 out of Iganga district, Mayuge district administration have comprehensive plans to better education, proper health services and respectable infrastructure and community development.

Mayuge district has a high prevalence of disease, poverty and hunger compared to the rest of the districts in Uganda

Mayuge district administration is also tackling issues of gender inequality in agriculture, unequal access to resources, employment opportunities and elimination of gender-based violence. The district also collaborates with organizations that help improve health and alleviate poverty and hunger.

Twegaite therefore set out to strengthen Mayuge district initiatives by proposing a Twegaite Mayuge Health Center Project that will strengthen Health Centers with the most need. Dr. Mutyabule, the Vice Chairman of Twegaite Boston and others have teamed up with the health administration in Mayuge, and isolated the Health Centers with the most need. The initial projects will be geared towards helping the wellbeing of patients by providing an excellent environment conducive for treatment and recovery.

Cultural Research Center – Jinja Diocese

The Centre started in 1997 September following a recommendation by the Jinja Diocesan Synod Delegates who sat in 1995.

Mission

To preserve and promote our God-given ancestral and life-giving cultural heritage; and to inculcate a deep sense of pride and belonging among the Basoga.

Objectives

To research into, document for preservation, sensitize and educate people about the Culture of the Basoga, its values and their relevance to society in today’s world.

• To promote literacy and self awareness
• To develop the Lusoga language through education.

Activities

Teaching Culture to Nuns.

• We carry out research in the region of Busoga on Culture of Basoga.
• Commit the findings to ink for future generations and the compiled information is printed in books.
• Make translations of texts relevant to Busoga, from other languages to Lusoga or from Lusoga to English.
• Conduct sensitization workshops on culture and human rights.
• Offer library services ( have a modest library)
• Networking with other related organizations in the promotion of culture in general
• Collect cultural artifacts for preservation.

Accomplishments

• We have now a Lusoga-English bilingual dictionary.
• A grammar book, standard orthography, a collection of a number of fables.
• A collection of close to 3,000 Kisoga proverbs under the title: Ensambo dh’Abasoga.
• Translated UDHR, CEDAW, CCPR and the Ugandan Children’s Act into Lusoga.
• Construction of a library (stocking is ongoing)
• Construction of a Sounding Recording studios (not yet soundproofed and no equipment)
• In collaboration with other stakeholders, we managed to get Lusoga started being taught in Primary Schools.
• A research into the Basoga traditional religion, the concept of witchcraft –Divination and Healing among the Basoga, Sanctity of Human life.
• We have contributed to the rejuvenation of  a high self-esteem among the Basoga.

What Next?

• To operationalize the sound recording studios.
• To engage in Adult literacy so as to promote literacy and reading culture.
• Research into  the family and marriage institution(s) among the Basoga.
• Herbal medicine and its sustainable utilization.
• Open to any new venture

Challenges

• Still a number of Basoga are not proud of who they are.
• There are divisions among the Basoga.
• Funding of the activities is still a big problem. We depend on one donor.
• People will support something they are going to benefit from financially hence “infuniramu wa?” syndrome.
• Lack of the political will.
